KIDNEY HEALTH, EXPLAINED

Chronic kidney disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) means the kidneys have lasting damage or cannot filter blood as well as they should. Finding out you may have CKD can feel worrying. Understanding your own situation is the first step.

Understanding kidney function

Kidney health is assessed using your history and, when appropriate, blood and urine tests. Early CKD may cause no symptoms. A single result needs to be interpreted in context.

Planning ongoing care

The discussion may cover the cause of kidney disease, blood pressure, medicines, and follow-up. Care is tailored to the person and how their kidney health changes over time.

Questions you may have

Does CKD mean I need dialysis?

Not necessarily. CKD has different stages. Dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure, not an automatic next step for everyone diagnosed with CKD.

What can we discuss at a consultation?

We can start with how you are feeling, what is worrying you, and what you would like to understand about your kidney health.

A few questions to start with

  • What does this diagnosis mean for me?
  • What should we focus on at this stage?
  • When would follow-up be helpful?
